Making It Better

If someone wants to make a difference in their community all they have to do is find the passion for what they do and be willing to put themselves out and share it with others. Makes sense, doesn't it?  Oxygen, sunshine, community, healthy eating? Watch the video:

The school bus that runs on sneakers and snow boots

The Kingfield neighborhood of Minneapolis was excited when it gained a designated community school in 2009. For many children, this meant attending a school closer to home, just one of the many benefits of a neighborhood school. For one group of active parents, the boundary change meant the option to walk their kids to school, which would save the district money on transportation costs. As their walk to school efforts gained support from the principal, staff and more families, Lyndale Community School was awarded a National Center for Safe Routes to School mini-grant, only one of 25 schools nationwide. Making It Better

Mr. Bordon and Ms. Farhiya Walking the Walk

Lyndale School's walking bus recently earned street cred on makingitbetter.org's site. Lyndale Community School is making it better by encouraging students and families to bike and walk to school. Families at Lyndale have found that students love to walk to school – they get exercise, build independence, and connect with friends and the broader community in the fresh air and sunshine (and no one tells them to stay in their seat).

Shepherding young soles one step at a time

From the amount of time Scott Bordon spends walking and running you may wonder if he is endorsed by a major athletic shoe manufacturer or at least owns a lot of stock in one. Last week, Bordon completed his 5th Twin Cities Marathon. This week, he's practically become Bikewalkmove.org's 2011 Man of the Year. Their site features a spread about Bordon's pet project, the Lyndale School Walking Bus. Scott's been cultivating a walk-to-school culture at Lyndale School for the past three years. Bordon says "Walking is good for the kids, their parents, and the planet. Walking is part of a solution for so many modern problems–pollution, obesity, school budget shortages, alienation and lack of community.".

By the way, this year Bordon finished the marathon with a new best time. But, you'll have to catch him if you want to find out how he did.
